Are Africanized honey bees more venomous than regular honey bees?

No. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension states that stings from Africanized honey bees are no more venomous than those of European honey bees. The danger is behavioral rather than chemical. Africanized colonies perceive threats at greater distances, react with far less provocation, and deploy the whole hive instead of a fraction of it. AgriLife reports they may pursue a victim up to a quarter mile and continue for up to 24 hours.

What should you do if an asp caterpillar stings you?

Do not rub the area, because rubbing drives the venomous spines deeper into the skin. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension recommends pressing cellophane tape onto the sting site and stripping it off repeatedly to pull out the embedded spines, then washing with soap and water and applying an ice pack. Oral antihistamines help with itching and burning. Seek immediate medical care if spines contact the eyes.

Are scorpions in Central Texas dangerous?

Texas Parks and Wildlife reports there are no medically dangerous scorpion species in Texas. The striped bark scorpion, found throughout Texas, delivers a sting comparable to a wasp sting, with localized pain, numbness and tingling that typically fades within a day or two. The only United States species reported to have caused human fatalities is the Arizona bark scorpion, which does not occur in Texas.

Are there hornets in Central Texas?

No. The European hornet is the only true hornet in North America, and its range extends only as far west as the Mississippi River, so it does not reach Central Texas. The rust colored wasp most people call a red hornet is a red paper wasp, Polistes carolina. Northern giant hornets, widely called murder hornets, were never found in Texas and were declared eradicated from the United States in 2024.

Tyler (00:46): It is so great to be back. And uh, right out of the gate today, I want to pitch a scenario to you, our listener. So imagine you're just standing in your front yard enjoying a sunny afternoon, right? Right. You brush your arm against this fuzzy little caterpillar on a low-hanging oak branch, and within seconds, you are the victim of a microscopic bank heist. You've just been injected with a stolen bacterial weapon.

Maddie (01:11): It is a rough afternoon.

Tyler (01:13): Yeah, it really is. Because today is part one of a three-part breakdown focusing on a totally unavoidable reality of living in this state, which is Central Texas pests.

Maddie (01:24): And we're dividing this up very deliberately for you guys. Today is strictly about the pests that announce themselves with instant immediate pain. So there's no mystery. You're not wondering what bit you three days ago. You are gonna know right away.

Tyler (01:36): Exactly. Just to set the boundaries here, we are saving the delayed reaction threats. You know, the ones that sneak up on you like ticks, brown recluses, and black widows. We're saving those for part two. Right. And the pests that ignore your body but quietly destroy your house, like termites and tree roaches, those are getting their own spotlight in part three.

Maddie (01:56): So today is really, well, it's an exercise in calibration. We want you to recalibrate your internal threat meter. I like that. Because as we look into these sources, a very clear pattern emerges. The scariest looking pests are often completely harmless, while the absolute most dangerous ones look entirely ordinary.

Tyler (02:15): The calibration idea is a perfect lens for this. And to test that threat meter, we actually have to start with a pest that looks incredibly inviting. I'm talking about the asp.

Maddie (02:26): Oh, the puss caterpillar.

Tyler (02:27): Right. If you haven't seen one, they look like a soft, pettable cotton tuft, just a tiny wandering toupee making its way across pecan trees in the late spring and fall.

Maddie (02:35): And that apparent softness is just the ultimate evolutionary trap.

Tyler (02:38): It really is. I mean, kids reach out to pet it. People who just move to the state think it's cute. I always just assume that when you touch it, you're getting hit with a standard insect neurotoxin, like a bee sting, just you know, in a weirder package.

Maddie (02:51): Yeah, and that was actually the scientific assumption for a really long time. But recent research published in the proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences completely upended that. It is absolutely not a neurotoxin.

Tyler (03:03): Wait, really?

Maddie (03:04): Nope. Hidden beneath that soft fur are these hollow spines. So when you press on them, the spines snap off into your skin and they release proteins called megalysin.

Tyler (03:14): I have never even heard of a megalysin. What does that actually do to the human body?

Maddie (03:19): It's essentially an aerolysin-like protein. So instead of just short-circuiting your nervous system the way a normal neurotoxin does, a megalysin physically punches holes in the membranes of your sensory neurons.

Tyler (03:30): Oh, wow.

Maddie (03:31): Yeah, it permeabilizes the cells. So you get this huge influx of ions into the cell, which triggers an immediate sustained burning sensation. You are experiencing physical structural damage to your nerve cells.

Tyler (03:43): So it's not a chemical poison dart, it's like a microscopic shotgun blowing holes in your pain receptors.

Maddie (03:48): Basically, yeah.

Tyler (03:49): And that brings us back to that hook I mentioned earlier, the stolen weapon thing.

Maddie (03:53): Yeah.

Tyler (03:53): Because the mechanism you just described, that's not typical for insects, right?

Maddie (03:57): Not at all. The research revealed that the caterpillar didn't evolve this toxin slowly on its own. It acquired the specific toxin genes directly from bacteria.

Tyler (04:06): To horizontal gene transfer.

Maddie (04:08): Exactly. Horizontal gene transfer.

Tyler (04:10): Okay, let me just pause there because horizontal gene transfer sounds like something out of a bioengineering lab. How does a caterpillar just casually acquire bacterial DNA?

Maddie (04:20): Think of it like biological open source code. Millions of years ago, a virus likely infected a bacterium, picked up this gene for punching holes in cells, and then infected an ancestor of the ASP caterpillar. Okay. And instead of killing the host, that bacterial DNA was integrated into the caterpillar's own genome. So over generations, it just successfully repurposed that bacterial tool into its own defensive venom.

Tyler (04:44): That is just wild. A stolen bacterial weapon hiding under a cute fuzzy coat. And the physical response is no joke. The sources describe a deep throbbing pain that can radiate all the way from your finger up into your armpit.

Maddie (04:59): Oh, yeah, it leaves this grid-like hemorrhagic rash right where the spines made contact.

Tyler (05:05): Which makes a first aid protocol critical. The Texas A&M AgriLife guidelines are incredibly strict on this. Whatever you do, do not rub the sting site.

Maddie (05:14): Because rubbing just grinds those broken, venom-filled spines deeper into your tissue.

Tyler (05:20): Precisely. You need to apply cellophane tape directly to the site and just strip it off. Repeat that a few times to physically yank the embedded spines out of your skin. The to know. Then wash with soap and water and apply ice. And keep in mind, because those megalysins are physically punching holes in your cells, standard aspirin isn't going to do anything for that specific structural pain.

Maddie (05:38): Right. It's purely mechanical extraction first. So we've got the asp, the undisputed king of deceptive pain. But as terrible as that sounds, it's a localized defense. It only works if you proactively touch it. Which makes me wonder you know, what happens when a threat isn't waiting passively on a leaf, but actively coordinates to hunt you down if you so much as breathe near it.

Tyler (05:59): Okay, that brings us to the one insect in our entire breakdown that has actually caused fatalities in Central Texas, the Africanized honeybee.

Maddie (06:07): Yeah, the history here is super interesting. They originally escaped from a research facility in Brazil back in 1957. By the fall of 1990, they had swarmed their way up into South Texas.

Tyler (06:17): And they've been a permanent fixture here ever since. But here's where I get stuck. The colloquial name killer bee, it implies something, I don't know, hyper-lethal. Do they possess some superpowered venom?

Maddie (06:30): See, that is the most important myth to dispel today. Their venom is exactly the same as a standard European honey bee.

Tyler (06:37): Wait, exactly the same.

Maddie (06:38): Exactly. Drop for drop, it is no more potent, no more toxic. It's the exact same chemical cocktail.

Tyler (06:43): Then how are they killing people? If the venom isn't worse, why are they the most dangerous thing on our list?

Maddie (06:48): Because the danger is entirely behavioral. With a normal European honeybee hive, if you accidentally bump it, maybe 10% of the colony will emerge to defend their home. They give you a physical warning, you back off, and the threat ends.

Tyler (07:04): Okay, and the Africanized bees.

Maddie (07:06): If you disturb an Africanized colony, their trigger threshold is practically zero, and they deploy the entire hive.

Tyler (07:13): So it's purely a numbers game.

Maddie (07:14): Thousands upon thousands of bees. And visually, you cannot tell them apart from normal bees. They are a completely hidden threat. The trigger can be as simple as the vibrations from a lawnmower or a string trimmer 20 yards away. Wow. They perceive that mechanical vibration as a direct existential assault on the hive.

Tyler (07:32): And the sources provided some really sobering context for this. There was a man in Moody, Texas driving a tractor who bumped into a woodpile. It turned out to be hiding a hive of roughly 40,000 Africanized bees.

Maddie (07:43): Oh, that's terrible.

Tyler (07:44): Yeah, and because he was on the tractor, he couldn't outrun them, and he tragically passed away. And right here in Austin, a resident was just walking her dog, triggered a hidden swarm, and took 80 stings. Her dog barely survived.

Maddie (07:57): It's a stark reminder of how fast a mundane chore can escalate into a severe medical emergency.

Tyler (08:03): Absolutely. So let's talk survival. Say I'm mowing the lawn, I hit a hollow stump, and suddenly I'm engulfed in a cloud of bees. My primal instinct is to start swatting them away from my face, or maybe sprint to the backyard and jump into the swimming pool. Use the water as a shield. Does that logic hold up?

Maddie (08:21): Emphatically, no. Both of those instincts will make the situation exponentially worse.

Tyler (08:26): Really?

Maddie (08:26): Yeah. If you swat and crush a bee, it releases alarm pheromones.

Tyler (08:30): Yeah.

Maddie (08:31): Specifically a chemical that smells faintly of artificial bananas.

Tyler (08:34): So swatting them essentially paints a chemical target on my back.

Maddie (08:37): Yes. You are perfuming yourself with a beacon that instructs hundreds more bees to attack that exact spot.

Tyler (08:43): That is terrifying.

Maddie (08:44): And jumping into water is equally disastrous. They are incredibly persistent defenders. They will hover in a dense cloud right above the surface of the water, tracking your exhaled carbon dioxide. The second you come up for air, they will swarm your face and your airways.

Tyler (09:00): Okay, so swatting is out, water is out. What is the actual survival protocol?

Maddie (09:04): Run away immediately and get indoors. That is the only rule. Get inside a house, a garage, or a car and firmly shut the door.

Tyler (09:12): Even if some get inside with me.

Maddie (09:14): Even if a dozen bees follow you inside, that is infinitely better than facing the remaining 30,000 outside. Just run and get a physical barrier between you and the swarm.

Tyler (09:23): Run and get indoors. I'm locking that into my memory. But you know, while killer bee swarms are deadly, they are still relatively rare. The next pest on our list is a statistical guarantee. If you live in Central Texas, you're going to encounter the fire ant.

Maddie (09:37): Oh, it is a geographic rite of passage at this point.

Tyler (09:40): Spotting their territory is your first line of defense, especially after a heavy rainstorm. You'll see these fluffy domes of excavated soil pop up in the yard. But the key identifier, and this is crucial for anyone new to the state, is that a fire ant mound has no central entrance hole at the top. Native ant mounds usually have a clear doorway. Fire ants tunnel in from the sides, creating a solid, thermoregulated dome.

Maddie (10:04): And that architecture plays a direct role in how they attack. Because when you step on that solid dome, you don't just disturb a few guards at a door. You compromise the structural integrity of the entire colony.

Tyler (10:15): Which they don't like.

Maddie (10:16): No, they don't. But what's truly diabolical is their coordination. They don't just sting the second they touch your shoe. They swarm up your leg first, communicating via chemical signals, just waiting until dozens or hundreds are in position. And then they release a synchronized strike.

Tyler (10:33): See, that's the part that always gets me. It always feels like one enormous bite all at once. How are they coordinating a simultaneous attack?

Maddie (10:40): They use a combination of alarm pheromones and stridulation, which is a subtle vibrating sound they make with their abdomens. Once the signal goes out, they all strike simultaneously. And the mechanics of the sting itself are uniquely awful. A fire ant uses its mandibles, its jaws, to bite down and physically anchor itself to your skin.

Tyler (10:59): So the bite isn't actually what hurts. The bite is just them getting a grip.

Maddie (11:03): Right. Once they are anchored with their jaws, they arch their abdomen down and inject the venom with their stinger. But because they are locked in place by their jaws, they pivot in a circle, stinging you repeatedly in an arc.

Tyler (11:16): Okay, that makes sense.

Maddie (11:17): Yeah, that repeated injection is why the pain feels so intense and why you'll often see a circular pattern of stings from a single ant.

Tyler (11:23): So if you're standing in the yard and feel that first sting, the local survival tactic is simple. Move first, look second, do not stand there trying to figure out what's biting you. Every second you stand still, more ants are climbing aboard.

Maddie (11:36): And the aftermath requires some serious discipline too. The venom they inject destroys the skin cells at the site. About 24 hours later, that localized cell death creates a sterile white pustule on the skin. I have to warn everyone listening, never pop that pustule.

Tyler (11:50): But it looks exactly like a pimple. I know. I mean the instinct to pop it is overwhelming.

Maddie (11:55): I know, but the venom and the resulting blister are entirely sterile. The moment you pop that bump, you are breaking the skin barrier and opening a direct route for a secondary bacterial infection. A staph infection from an open fire ant wound is often far worse than the original sting. Leave the bumps alone.

Tyler (12:12): Leave them alone. All right, we've covered a deceptive caterpillar, an aggressive bee, and a coordinated ant. Now I want to look at a terrifying pest that literally does not exist. We're moving from tangible threats to phantom threats.

Maddie (12:26): The porch panic. This is pure myth busting, and it is incredibly necessary.

Tyler (12:32): Every single summer, neighborhood apps light up with people terrified of these huge aggressive red hornets dive bombing their patios. But looking at the entomological data in our sources, there is a glaring issue with that panic.

Maddie (12:43): The issue is that there is no true hornet native to central Texas. Zero.

Maddie (12:48): None.

Maddie (12:48): None. And just to clarify, another widespread panic, those famous murder hornets from the news a few years ago, they have been entirely eradicated from the United States and they were never in Texas to begin with.

Tyler (12:58): So if there are no hornets here, what am I looking at when I step onto my back porch and see a rust-colored inch-long angry flying insect building a nest on the ceiling?

Maddie (13:09): You are looking at a red paper wasp, specifically Polistes carolina. They are wasps, not hornets. They are completely rust-colored with contrasting dark, almost black wings. The dead giveaway is the architecture of their home. They build those umbrella-shaped gray paper nests under the eaves of roofs or inside porch corners.

Tyler (13:29): Right, where you can see all the open hexagonal brood cells on the underside.

Maddie (13:33): Now, paper wasps are very territorial. If you get too close to that nest, they will aggressively defend it. And here's where they differ from a honeybee. A wasp has a smooth stinger. They can sting you repeatedly without losing their stinger and dying. So give them a wide berth.

Tyler (13:47): And while we're on the subject of wasps, we should probably mention yellow jackets. Because they are the ones usually responsible when someone is mowing the lawn and suddenly gets lit up around the ankles.

Maddie (13:56): Yes, yellow jackets are also wasps, but they typically nest in the ground or in wall voids. Like the Africanized bees, they respond fiercely to the vibrations of a lawnmower, but they are localized offenders, not entire hive hunters.

Tyler (14:09): Got it. So we've handled the porch and the lawn. Let's move indoors to the pests that dictate how Texans actually go to sleep. I'm talking about the bedtime rituals.

Maddie (14:20): The mandatory Central Texas shoe shake and bed shake.

Tyler (14:23): It is complete muscle memory at this point. You do not put a shoe on without violently shaking it upside down first, just in case a striped bark scorpion decided it was a nice, dark, climate-controlled cave.

Maddie (14:35): And they do seek out those dark sheltered spaces. The striped bark scorpion is remarkably adaptable. It's found in every single county in Texas. But I want to offer some profound reassurance here to you guys. Despite how intimidating they look with the pincers and the stinger, there are absolutely no medically dangerous scorpions native to Texas.

Tyler (14:54): Wait, really? Because you always hear these horror stories about scorpion venom.

Maddie (14:59): People often conflate our local species with the Arizona bark scorpion, which actually can be dangerous. But the venom of the striped bark scorpion is medically insignificant to humans. Unless you have a specific rare allergy, a sting will hurt intensely and might tingle for a day or two, but it is not life-threatening.

Tyler (15:19): I mean, nobody wants to experience that pain in the first place, though. If I want to clear my patio or check my bedroom, what's the best way to spot them before they spot me?

Maddie (15:27): This is where their biology gives us a tremendous advantage. You need to get a UV blacklight. If you shine a black light in a dark room or along a fence line, scorpions fluoresce a bright blue-green or teal color.

Tyler (15:40): Why do they glow? Is it a warning system?

Maddie (15:42): It's actually a bit of a scientific mystery, but we know how it happens. It's due to specific compounds located in the cuticle, the tough outer part of their exoskeleton. The practical result is that even their shed, empty exoskeletons will glow teal, leaving a perfect footprint if they've been hanging around.

Tyler (15:58): A built-in biological alarm system if you own a cheap flashlight. Now, moving from the scorpion, I want to bring up another legendary stinger that wanders around the yard. The velvet ant, or as it's famously known around here, the cowkiller.

Maddie (16:12): We need to immediately clarify both parts of that name. First, the velvet ant is not an ant at all. It is a wingless, groundwalking female wasp. They have incredibly thick exoskeletons and are covered in bright, fuzzy red and black hairs. That coloring is a giant warning sign.

Tyler (16:29): Well, if it's a wasp, where does the cow killer nickname come from? Does it actually take down livestock?

Maddie (16:34): Pure folk hyperbole. The venom is entirely non-lethal to livestock and humans. The nickname simply comes from the fact that the sting is extraordinarily painful. Because these female wasps are wingless and walk along the ground, barefoot kids and curious dogs are usually the ones who discover them. It will hurt intensely, but it will absolutely not kill a cow.

Tyler (16:53): Okay, we are entering the final stretch of today's examination of these sources, and this is the climax of our calibration scale. I want to look at the visual bluffs. These are the pests that look like absolute science fiction monsters, but are anatomically incapable of doing any real damage.

Maddie (17:10): This is the ultimate looks worse than it is category.

Tyler (17:13): First up, the Texas giant red-headed centipede. If you have not seen one of these, mentally prepare yourself. It is an eight-inch multicolored nightmare. Dark body, bright red head, and bright yellow legs.

Maddie (17:26): It's an intensely intimidating animal, but again, those colors are aposematic nature's neon sign saying, leave me alone. I do want to correct a very common anatomical error we see in regional media, though. You'll often hear people say centipedes bite with gnathostomes.

Tyler (17:41): That sounds like something out of a horror movie.

Maddie (17:43): It does, but gnathostome actually just refers to jawed vertebrates like fish or humans. Centipedes don't use jaws, they use what are called forcipules.

Tyler (17:51): Forcipules?

Maddie (17:52): Yes. They are essentially the first pair of legs evolutionarily modified into venom-injecting claws that fold around the head.

Tyler (17:58): Wait, they bite you with modified, venomous legs. That is somehow infinitely worse than fangs.

Maddie (18:05): I know it sounds horrifying, but here is the reassurance. Despite those warning colors, and despite the fact that a pinch from those forcipules delivers bee-sting-level pain, they are not aggressive. They almost always flee when encountered, and a bite has never killed a human.
